Visual Perception and the Brain
This course will help students distinguish between what we see and what we perceive, ie. the visual systems and our perception. The course is being offered by Duke University and can be completed in 15 hours. In this course, students will learn about light, darkness, color, space and motion. Some topics that will be covered in the course include the structure and functioning of the eye, geometric illusions, luminance, color vision and perception, stereopsis, etc. amongst many other topics.
Visual Perceptions and Visual Illusions
This course is aimed at anyone interested in the psychology of visual perception and helps students understand vision better. The course is being offered by Saint Petersburg State University and can be completed in approximately 15 hours. In this course, students will learn about the different theories of perception, classification of illusions, physiological and neurological basis of visual perception as well as light, lightness and its perception and illusion. Students will also learn about color illusions and look at examples of each of these.
Visual Elements of User Interface Design
This course is a part of the UI / UX design specialization being offered by the California Institute of Arts and can be completed by students in approximately 16 hours. The course is ideal for anyone with some background in graphic designing who would like to learn about user interface designing. In this course, students will look at the user interface from the designer’s perspective and learn about the different elements that make up an interface. Students begin with understanding what an interface is, learn about the different elements and analyze how users interact with these elements while also understanding how to bring together all the elements to create a user-friendly interface.
Introduction to Programming for Visual Arts with p5.js
This course will help students learn to code for visual arts. The course is being offered by the UCLA School of Arts and Architecture and can be completed by students in 11 sessions at their own pace. In this course, students will begin by learning the basics of coding and then move on to learning about variables and loops. Students will also learn about non-linear narratives, motion, flow and response, functions, objects, arrays and games. The course will cover a wide range of topics that come into play while coding in the context of visual arts.
Visual Presentation
This course is aimed at helping students use visual elements to enhance the appeal of their presentations. The course is being offered by the Rochester Institute of Technology and can be completed by students in 3 weeks. This course will help students get familiar with the key principles, best practices and ethics that come into play in visual communication. In this course, students will also learn how to incorporate visual elements into their regular presentations, how to choose images appropriate to their audience and also understand the visual hierarchy and other text-to-image relationships.
Teaching Children with Visual Impairment: Creating Empowering Classrooms
This course will help students acquire the skills that they need to convert their classrooms into empowering and inclusive ones keeping in mind visually impaired students. The course is being offered by the University of Cape Town and can be completed in approximately 15 hours. In this course, students will understand the needs of visually impaired students and curate teaching strategies to make content accessible to these students. Students will learn how to differentiate and expand the curriculum, learn about assistive technologies and also learn how to be more compassionate towards students with special needs.
Visual Perception for Self Driving Cars
This online course is a part of the Self Driving Cars specialization that is being offered by the University of Toronto and can be completed by students in approximately 31 hours. This is an advanced level course and on completion, students will be able to independently work with the pinhole camera model, perform camera calibrations, detect, describe and match image features as well as design their own convolutional neural networks. Students are required to have a background in computer learning and deep vision to pursue this course. To do well programming experience with Python 3.0 and familiarity with Linear Algebra is also advised.
Pictures of Youth: Introduction to Children’s Visual Culture
This course is ideal for anyone with an interest in contemporary educational and cultural topics and focuses on visual analysis. The course is being offered by the University of York and can be completed in 4 weeks. In this course, students will be introduced to the popular types of visual culture for children and young people. The various topics that students enrolling in this course will revolve around comic books, children’s films, children on TV and stage and picturebooks.
All of these courses have been delivered in English. Students can audit these courses for free but for a professional certificate, a fee may be required. Financial aid is available for some of the courses mentioned above.
